A scale and polish is the most common dental treatment, and usually takes 20–40 minutes.

Step by step

  1. Check-up first. Your dentist looks for areas of build-up and gum bleeding.
  2. Scaling. An ultrasonic scaler and hand instruments remove tartar above and just below the gumline.
  3. Polishing. A gritty paste smooths the surface so plaque has less to cling to.

Does it hurt?

Most people feel vibration and mild sensitivity, not pain. If your gums are very inflamed, ask for numbing gel. See also: tartar.

Frequently asked questions

Does scaling damage tooth enamel?

No. Scaling removes tartar from the tooth surface; done properly, it does not remove enamel.
